“How to Harbor an Illegal” is a short story based on real events, in which a stranger approached me asking for help. I began developing the idea shortly after it happened to me, but I didn’t feel ready to do justice by the experience. I produced the first through third drafts while in graduate school. It won the Lainoff Prize in my MFA Program, as well as Second Place in Glimmer Train’s Short Story Award for New Writers.
